Do Medical Marijuana Recommendations Expire?

Do Medical Marijuana Recommendations Expire?

If you receive a medical marijuana recommendation from your physician, it won’t provide indefinite access to cannabis. Here, we’ll discuss the expiration of medical marijuana recommendations and how to ensure that you don’t have gaps in cannabis treatment.

What’s a Medical Marijuana Recommendation?

A medical marijuana recommendation is provided by a physician. A recommendation is different from a prescription. While you can take a prescription to a pharmacy to receive the medication, a medical marijuana recommendation can’t simply be taken to a dispensary. Instead, the recommendation is used to apply to Florida’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use or OMMU. Once the application is approved, the patient will receive a medical marijuana ID card.

When Does The Recommendation Expire?

Once you are provided with a medical marijuana recommendation and obtain your Florida medical marijuana card, it’s valid for a year. After that year, the card expires, which is why it’s important to remember to renew your medical marijuana card with the OMMU online every year, theTetra Health Centers team is happy to assist their patients with this task. But, the state of Florida also requires users to visit a qualified physician face-to-face every 7 months to obtain medical cannabis at a dispensary. So, medical marijuana users will need to visit a physician, like a member of the team at Tetra Health Centers, at least twice per year to continue receiving cannabis from a dispensary.

How To Renew Your Medical Marijuana Card

You can begin the process of renewing your Florida medical marijuana card 45 days before the expiration date. You can see the expiration date of your current card printed beneath your birth date. By renewing your medical marijuana card 45 days before the expiration date (not on the expiration date), you can avoid having to go without the cannabis that you rely on to manage your symptoms.

Medical cannabis use in Florida requires visits to a qualified physician, like one of the medical marijuana doctors at Tetra Health Centers, at the 7-month and 1-year marks after getting (or renewing) your Florida medical marijuana card. Your physician will provide an assessment to ensure that cannabis is still a safe and effective treatment option for you. If it is, you’ll be provided with a new medical marijuana recommendation.

With your new recommendation, you can complete the process of renewing your Florida medical marijuana card online at OMMU’s website or continue obtaining cannabis products at a dispensary.

To receive a medical marijuana recommendation in Florida, schedule an appointment at Tetra Health Centers for an assessment.
